S100B is widely and predominantly expressed in astrocytes throughout the brain. Additional staining is also reported in neuronal cell bodies from distinct regions of the hindbrain. Interestingly, available RNA data (ISH and RNA-SEQ) agree on an enrichment of S100B in the areas of cerebellum, pons and medulla.
Accordingly, abundant strong immunostaining of astrocytes is noticed throughout the entire brain. Also, strong neuronal somatic immunostaining is noticed in some distrinct midbrain and hindbrain nuclei, like the red nucelus, motor trigeminal nucelus, facial nucleus, lateral paragigantocellular nucelus and some cerebellar nuclei.
